I have spent 26 years of my life pretending to be someone I'm not, and finally I'm ready to live my true self. The reality of being a trans woman of colour is that you find our much later than your white counterparts. The idea that you could possibly be something else seems so obscure to you, because you've spent much of your life already trying to accept that your real 'ethnic' side is shameful enough to the outside world. There are layers upon layers of masks, but removing it has been the most liberating experience of my life.
This is the most vulnerable song and video I have ever made. I created it while I had to self isolate for COVID, and I let my beard and my body hair grow out. It was a difficult time, but it was worth it to convey these complicated emotions.
I'm dedicating this song, and indeed this album, to some very dear friends of mine: Rob, C_ and Grim, all of whom enabled me to accept myself for who I really am. I'd also like to dedicate this project to Amy and The Cowley Club - a safe space for me where I felt comfortable to venture though this journey of self discovery. I love all of you so much.
